Tough Times Ahead . . . Behind . . . and All Around Us!

I have heard many people comment that you can not make a farmer happy.

  • The fields are too wet or too dry
  • The price of crops is high . . . but the yield in the field is too low to benefit from the high prices!
  • The yield is high . . . but the prices are too low!

And to be honest, I can't remember a single time that I have ever asked a farmer how it is going, and not heard a complaint about something. Well, that holds true for all of us, not just farmers.

As a professional marketer I talk to a lot of business owners in everything from retail to manufacturing to professional services. I have noticed a funny thing, everyone has problems to deal with!

What are some of the problems that we all face on a daily basis?

  • Economy
  • Employee Issues
  • Inventory
  • Taxes
  • Marketing
  • Theft

The list is endless. The point I am trying to make here is that no matter how well it is going for one thing, there is always something else that requires some attention.

It isn't so much what needs attention; as it is how we react to the challenges that face us.

A big topic of concern locally as well as nationally relates to the economy. Many are concerned that their business will not survive the current economic conditions. Well, the businesses that do survive will be the ones that were able to react well.

When net profits decrease, no matter the reason, we must react! Don't stand in the middle of the highway like a deer staring into headlights!

Corrective actions for dealing with decreases in net income are numerous and will vary greatly from situation to situation. Some things that may need to happen could be to:

  • Reduce payroll
    • Cut hours or positions
  • Reduce waste
    • Make employees accountable for waste
  • Increase productivity
    • Training
    • Better Work Flow
  • Increase Sales
    • Increase Marketing
    • Train Sales Force
    • Offer Purchasing Incentives
    • Relay out product displays

No matter what is behind the headlights, we must react. After all, it could be a big old mac truck that will flatten us on the highway!

Reacting to change can be difficult to do, letting people go, increasing advertising expenses when revenue is low, but sometimes those things must be done.

Times change, it seems more and more quickly as we become more 'techno-savy'. Those who are able to adjust with change, will find that they are better - stronger business people.

As we look around and see that tough times abound, I can give you some good news to ponder. The principles remain the same, watch what is happening around you and react accordingly.

Tip of the Month!

Take the time to review your website at least once a month. Keeping your website current is vital to how well potential customers will perceive the quality of your business.

It is amazing how often little things will be caught on one of these regular reviews. You may find a simple typo, error or inconsistency in information presented on the site, or you may suddenly think of something that is missing all together.

The time you invest in keeping your website up-to-date will pay off in big dividends later.
