10 ways to Build Your Email List!

I am not going to preach to those of you who do not use email as a part of your marketing plan . . . just know that you really should consider it.

The greatest part of email marketing campaigns is that, when properly done, you are marketing directly to people who have flat out told you, "I want you to sell to me!"

As long as you follow the most important rule, "Thou shalt only send emails to those who request them", you will be fine. Spammers are the people who send emails to people who do not request them.

OK, the trick here is in how to get people to request that you send offers to their email boxes. Let's list 10 strategies:

  1. Online Registration: Use the power of your website to solicit email addresses for your newsletters or electronic flyers.
    • Include a sign up box on each page of your website
    • Include a sign up check box on your online contact form

  2. Archive: Maintain an online archive of all newsletters on your website.

  3. Content: Make sure that all newsletters and electronic flyers clearly provide links and/or instructions on how to sign up.

  4. Referrals: Make sure all newsletters and electronic flyers have "email a friend" links.

  5. Article Distribution: Post your articles on websites that collect and re-distribute articles for content on other websites. (Make sure links to your website and email sign-up forms are included  in the article itself or bio area of the posting.)

  6. Display Booths: When setting up a display booth include printed samples of newsletters/flyers at the booth with paper registration forms.

  7. Point of Purchase: Keep paper sign up forms at the check out register and incorporate a quick, "You may sign up to receive special offers in your inbox by completing this form." into the sales transaction.

  8. Network: Just flat out tell people you talk to about the opportunity and supply them with a sign up form that lists the web address for your online sign up form. (Also allow them to fill the form out and hand it back to you, if they prefer.)

  9. Co-registration Opportunities: Look for opportunities to team up with non-competitors. Write an article for someone else's publication; become a guest speaker; etc.

  10. Benefits: Let people know what the benefits are to them if they sign up for your newsletter or electronic flyers. Motivate them to sign up!

Now I am sure we can come up with a much more comprehensive list, but this serves well as these are the basics. You are limited only by your imagination!

Keep in mind that this isn't something you do for a while then quit because you have enough names. This really needs to be done on a regular - ongoing basis. This type of marketing really goes straight to the group of people you are interested in marketing to. They are the people who are telling you that they want to do business with you.

One final thought, I would like to dispel an incredibly defeatist attitude I often come across.

  • "Come on, most of the people that sign up for these things are people I have already done business with. I don't need to market to them! They will either come back or not! "

In today's marketplace customer loyalty is on a decline. Not because people are "un-loyal" but because they are bombarded with marketing messages from your competitors.

The number of competitors you have has greatly increased because of the internet, and it will continue to grow. You need to keep out in front of even the most loyal of customers to help them maintain their loyalty.

It isn't their job to remember you, it is your job to remind them who you are.

Tip of the Month!

Its a tough economy out there! I guess I don't have to tell you that. Conservation is going to be key in coming months for just about everyone; but you don't want to sacrifice performance.

It would be very prudent to take your financial analysis sheet and work up a break even point. Why? Knowing your break-even is one of those things that is vital to any business. But beyond that, working through your financials is an excellent way to identify areas of waste.

Going through this process can be a great way to identify areas where you may be overspending and help you figure out where you can safely and effectively trim expenses!
