The idea behind Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is to drive targeted traffic to your website, people that are looking specifically for your products or services. There are many options available . . . not all of which are appropriate for every advertiser.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of making your website more noticeable to search engines with the end purpose of achieving higher rankings within the search engine database. In short it is a way to ensure that your website appears as close as possible to the beginning of the list.

Everyone knows the names of the big hitters like Google and Yahoo, but there are hundreds of search engines out there, with more being added all the time.

There is no set formula on how search engines gather information and determine the appropriate rating for websites in their databases. They all have their own proprietary systems. To complicate things further, they change how they gather this information from time to time. This has a tendency to make Search Engine Optimization a very difficult and labor intensive task to accomplish.

Cost-per-Action (CPA) is an advertising option similar to Pay-per-Click where you pay per action. The action can be an online sale, submission of a contact form, survey or other action.

Cost-per-thousand (CPM) is an online marketing model that is similar to Pay-per-Click where you pay per 1000 impressions of your ad.

Link Building is the process of developing quality incoming and outgoing links. Search Engines view your website's links as a vote of support. This is the closest thing that the internet has to a good old fashioned referral.
